REFERENCE RANGES FOR THYROID HORMONES

Thyroid hormone Reference range

TSH 0.4–4.5ng/ml, although many fertility clinics will start a programme of thyroxine supplementation at any TSH levels above 2.0 because it has such a significant impact upon fertility.

FT3 – Free Triiodothyronine 4–8.3ng/ml

FT4 – Free Thyroxine 10–24ng/ml

TT4 – Total Thyroxine 50–160ng/ml

The table on the previous page sets out the reference ranges for all the thyroid hormones.

ANAEMIA

Anaemia occurs when the body has too little iron to manufacture oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Without good oxygen levels, all our vital organs, including our reproductive ones, are compromised. For a woman, good blood flow is essential for developing an endometrium with a thickness of 8mm or more, which is essential for conception and sustaining a pregnancy.

Women who experience heavy bleeds or who are very stressed are particularly prone to low iron. If you look at their feet, you’ll see they are usually very yellow! This is because low iron levels also equate to low levels of haemoglobin, the pigmentation in red blood cells to which oxygen attaches to be carried around the body. Anaemia is diagnosed by a blood test to measure haemoglobin. The reference range for healthy haemoglobin levels is between 11 and 15g/dl.
